AppleInsider uses wrong units

May 27, 2009

AppleInsider isn’t exactly the pinnacle of mainstream journalism by any stretch of the imagination, but they have quite a high readership in the world of Apple users. Nevermind the fact that they appear to use pseudonyms for all of their articles (it’s still amusing to me when Google News aggregation picks up a story by Prince McLean — I guess it could be a real name); they are also not immune to errors in copy. In this story, they labeled 120 GB as $120 GB.

AP makes punctuation errors

May 27, 2009

The AP is not immune to copy errors, and they made at least one and arguably two in this piece on the Giro d’Italia. The first is the missing period. The second is a comma splice.

Laptop Mag misspells ‘place’

Laptop Mag may not be one of the Big Ten in publishing, by a long shot, but they’re still a reasonable respectable publication with a high readership.

PC World misquotes EU fine for Intel

May 16, 2009

PC World were either off by several orders of magnitude or typed ‘m’ instead of ‘b’. Either way:

For those keeping score at home, Intel were fined 1.4 billion dollars.

ESPN makes category error

May 16, 2009

This is a simple error from ESPN but an error nonetheless. ESPN lumps several sports underneath its Olympic Sports category, including swimming, cycling, and often running. They had a small box on a swimming article page that read, “More Swimming Headlines.” Of the five headlines, one is related to swimming, one is running (Bolt), two are cycling (Lance and Di Luca), and the final is skiing (Bode).

Boston Globe forgets a word

May 11, 2009

The Boston Globe forgot a word meaning “sent”:

globe

I think it should read, ” … in a crash that sent nearly 50 people to the hospital.”

Majestic Athletic misspells ‘Nationals’ on jersey

May 7, 2009

This one isn’t exactly traditional print media but pretty funny. Apparently the company that makes the jerseys for the Washington Nationals baseball team forgot to buy a vowel.

BBC misspells name

May 7, 2009

BBC misspells Dr Abbott’s name here. For more fun, there is a comma splice in a sentence in the second paragraph. The phrase “believe it to be meteoric in nature” is not a complete sentence. There are other things here that are likely local style guidelines and therefore not errors, such as the commonly British (though I do it too) practise (sic) of omitting the period after an abbreviated title such as ‘Dr’.
